How the calculation works
First the tool computes the part’s volume from its geometry: a circle’s area times length for a round bar, width times height times length for a rectangular bar, the wall area times length for a tube, and area times thickness for a plate. Dimensions are entered in millimetres and converted to cubic centimetres, since one cubic centimetre is a thousand cubic millimetres.
Multiplying that volume by the material’s density gives the mass. The answer appears in grams, kilograms, and pounds so you can check it against a scale, a shipping limit, or a lifting plan. Values are rounded for display.

How is the weight of a metal part calculated?
Weight comes from two things: the volume of the part and the density of the material. The tool works out the volume from the shape and dimensions you enter — a round bar, rectangular bar, tube, or plate — then multiplies by density. Mass in grams equals volume in cubic centimetres times density in grams per cubic centimetre, and the result is also shown in kilograms and pounds.
Where do the density figures come from?
The built-in values are typical room-temperature densities for common engineering metals — for example steel at 7.85, aluminium at 2.70, and titanium at 4.51 grams per cubic centimetre. Real alloys vary a little with composition and temper, so if you know the exact grade you are using, choose the custom-density option and enter its published value for a tighter estimate.
Can I calculate a hollow part like a tube?
Yes. Select the tube shape and enter the outer diameter, inner diameter, and length. The tool subtracts the bore from the solid volume, so you get the weight of the wall material only. The inner diameter must be smaller than the outer diameter, otherwise there is no wall left and the calculator flags it.
What if my shape is not in the list?
Work out the volume of your part some other way — by breaking it into simple solids, or from a CAD model — then enter that value directly in cubic centimetres and pick the material. The tool will convert it straight to weight, which is handy for castings, weldments, and irregular profiles.
