Results Are Simplified Estimates
The tools apply standard, idealised formulas and round their output for readability. Real joints and machines involve friction scatter, material variation, safety factors, dynamic and shock loads, wear, temperature, and assembly effects that a simple model does not capture. A torque-to-preload figure in particular is an estimate with wide scatter; treat every result as a starting point, not a guaranteed value.
Why a Result May Look Off
A calculator can return a surprising or blank answer when:
- Units are mismatched: entering pressure in psi where bar is expected, or a length in centimetres where millimetres are expected, changes the answer entirely.
- Inputs describe an impossible part: for example, a rod diameter equal to or larger than the cylinder bore, or a negative dimension.
- The wrong grade or pitch is selected:a fastener’s property class and thread pitch strongly affect the clamp load and torque a calculator returns.
- Losses are ignored: gear, belt, and hydraulic outputs are shown before friction and efficiency losses, which reduce the real-world figure.
